National Preparedness Month 2026

Emergency Preparedness Month was founded in 2003 and sponsored by the Emergency Management Agency in the US Department of Homeland Security. Their goal was to educate and spread awareness to the public about how to be prepared for emergencies such as natural disasters, mass casualties, biological and chemical threats, radiation emergencies and terrorist attacks. Since then, the national campaign has grown to include over 3,000 organizations annually.

During the month long observance, public and private gatherings take place across the country to promote emergency preparedness. These include seminars on developing a family disaster plan, gathering emergency supplies, learning how to shelter, understanding quarantine and isolation and maintaining a healthy state of mind during an emergency. There are also some more celebratory events that help make the learning experience more enjoyable. At these events, there are often fun activities and the exchange of informational handouts and giveaways.
