National Public Safety Telecommunications Week

The second week of April is National Public Safety Telecommunications Week, when communities across America honor 9-1-1 call takers, dispatchers, technicians and other telecommunications staff. These are the people that work to help saves lives in times of personal or national crisis, every day.

National Public Safety Telecommunications Week was started at the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office in California, in 1981 and was only celebrated at that individual office for 3 years. Eventually, members of the Virginia and North Carolina chapters of the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials became involved and by the early 1990s the national APCO organization was able to convince congress that a national observance was necessary. By 1994 it became a permanent week long campaign.

National Public Safety Telecommunications Week is now celebrated with many events that recognize the 911 telecommunications staff and offer an opportunity for the public to thank them for their continuous efforts.
