Fire Prevention Week began as a result of a disastrous fire that occurred in the city of Chicago, Illinois on October 8, 1871. The Great Chicago Fire lasted for two days, doing most of its damage during the blaze’s second day on October 9, ultimately destroying an area of roughly 2000 acres. In 1911, the Fire Marshals Association of North America, now known as the International Fire Marshals Association, decided that the anniversary of this tragic event should be used as an opportunity to educate the public, especially the youth, about fire prevention.
Each year, Fire Prevention Week is observed during the week of October 9th to commemorate the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire. It is the longest running health and safety observance on record. During this time, firefighters visit schools to talk about fire safety, and fire companies host open house events and give tours of their firehouses.
